As New Zealand’s second-largest airport and a critical gateway to the South Island, Christchurch Airport plays a vital role in driving the region’s trade and tourism. Passenger numbers have soared in recent years, fuelled by new infrastructure and facilities that position Christchurch as an attractive hub for both visitors and businesses.

International passenger volumes are up 32% in the past financial year alone, with total passenger traffic climbing 10% over the same period. Preparing for a busy summer, the airport is boosting capacity with a 25% increase in long-haul seats and additional daily flights to Auckland.

Amid this growth, Christchurch Airport has rolled out Veovo’s Intelligent Airport Platform, a new-generation airport management platform designed to keep pace with rising demand while delivering smoother, smarter operations.

A trusted source of truth for staff and passengers

Veovo’s  Flight Management module and Airport Operational Database (AODB) now provide a single, consistent source of truth about flights and resources for all airport teams and partners from anywhere via a web interface, improving collaboration. This new role-based window to flight operations, designed with busy airport staff in mind, serves up important information in a very visual way with alerts and recommendations, helping teams work more efficiently and prioritise activities.

Not only do airport staff now have greater certainty about airport operations, arrivals and departures, but so do travellers.

New video walls and dynamic displays powered by Veovo Guest Engagement offer visitors a visually engaging way to navigate the airport and stay informed. The easily configurable FIDS platform enables Christchurch Airport to automatically tailor the displays to align with passenger needs based on their location in the airport and even language.

Scalable for future growth

As passenger numbers rise and system usage expands, Veovo’s robust processing power can seamlessly handle increased data loads and integrate new functionalities to meet the growing needs of the airport.

By transitioning to the new generation platform, the airport has made significant strides in continuously improving its operations. Veovo’s continuous development and delivery approach will allow the operator to test and deploy software updates more quickly and efficiently. This includes the ability to make incremental improvements to their technology stack for performance, security enhancements, regulatory compliance and reporting.

“Moving to this modern AODB and FIDS to manage daily operations and flight information is a win-win for both airport operators and passengers – improving passenger experience and boosting airport performance,” commented Craig Rickard, Manager Information Technology Services at Christchurch Airport. “We’re also excited about the ability to quickly adopt new capabilities as they become available in the future.”

Besides being known for embracing innovation and digital technology, Christchurch Airport is also highly regarded for its sustainability efforts, with the airport among the first ten in the world to achieve a new level in Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) – Christchurch being the only airport in the Southern Hemisphere.
