Universe Science Park Adopts Veovo Density Solution to Ensure Safe Experiences

As theme parks begin reopening, they will need to adhere to strict physical distancing requirements. To help them manage crowds more effectively, Universe Science Park in Denmark has turned to Veovo for a crowd density solution.
When one thinks of amusement parks, you immediately think of entertainment and fun, but also crowds and queues. But with new physical distancing requirements, the maximum allowable capacity at these entertainment venues will, necessarily, drop.
Physical distancing is expected to remain one of the primary weapons against Covid-19 for the foreseeable future, leaving theme parks facing the challenge of keeping guests safely apart.
How can theme parks make the most of reopening, while complying with regulations and reassuring visitors that everything possible is being done to safeguard them? Success will, in part, require understanding how people move, and using data to manage their flow and distribution.
Using data to understand guest flow
In 2018, Denmark’s Universe Science Park, a technology-themed adventure park, installed Veovo’s Guest Predictability solution. By combining WiFi/Bluetooth and 3D sensor data with advanced machine learning and intelligent automation, the solution provides a cohesive view of how guests move through and use the park, as well as visitor volumes and area occupancy. This real-time information helps the park get ahead of flow issues before they happen, ensure staff are used optimally, as well as deliver valuable input for future park design planning.
Wanting to automate their monitoring of and responses to government’s distancing guidelines as much as possible, they approached Veovo with the task of creating density alarms that would help them manage occupancy, and avoid breaches.
Letting the data speak for itself
Since they initially installed Guest Predictability, the park has used this detailed flow data to make both live and ongoing planning decisions. Among the multiple benefits of this system is the ability to reduce crowding and to maximise capacity efficiently. The park can also provide live attraction wait time information for guests, helping them plan their experience and use their time better. Thanks to the success of this technology, the park was therefore well-positioned to easily and quickly consider innovative solutions like crowd density management to the social distancing conundrum.
In collaboration with Veovo, they developed a solution that suited them. In addition to providing a real-time, reliable overview of guest volumes and behaviour, the system now also includes location-specific crowd density information. Live dashboards show the degree of risk, based on social distancing recommendations, crowd movement patterns and area size. Threshold limits trigger the relevant alarm and automated action, such as updating messages on screens and directing staff to redirect flow to less-crowded areas.
“To solve our continuous monitoring needs, we identified that our existing Veovo sensor-based solution was the ideal starting point. After discussing how to easily identify guest numbers by area to ensure safe distancing, Veovo proposed an alarm-based system that sends alerts at predetermined occupancy levels. Consequently, it’s quick and easy to take the necessary action to ensure everyone’s safety,” says Jonas Juhl Luttermann, Chief Operating Officer at Universe,
A system for the future
Additionally, the solution indicates how disruptions or changes affect behaviour, thereby enabling improved capacity planning and operations. Thanks to continuous monitoring, the system ultimately improves the park’s ability to adhere to safety protocols, thus minimising the risk of overcrowding, accidents, fire or other security hazards, even once social distancing is no longer required.
In addition to Universe Science Park, Veovo’s social distancing solutions are also being implemented in sports arenas, rail and metro stations, and airports globally to help with crowd density.

“Veovo’s technology gives us complete passenger flow visibility, helping us make informed decisions to deliver a better-quality passenger experience.“
